Welcome to the Teddy Orphanage at Grannys Attic - Blog 3

End August 2014

Welcome to the third blog from me, Granny Annie, at the Teddy Orphanage at Grannys Attic on Groovycart. If you would like to read the profiles of all the bears that are hoping to be adopted either go to Grannys Attic Groovycart or to my first blog in July. To see HOW to adopt a bear find the details at the end of this blog.

Harry, the gardening bear, has been picking blackberries....

He was pleased with the crop this year

And so was Joy, who plans to make some nice little pots of jams and jellies

Joy also planned a cream cake treat for Granny Annie and her hubby....

But the cheeky twins, Charlie and Archie got there first!

(If you'd like to consider adopting Harry or Joy or the twins or to see other bears in need of adoption go to Teddy Adoption

Not long ago, the Bears saw someone coming up the road.....in search of the Orphanage

It was a tired young mother bear, with her baby in a pram

Poor Cordelia had to leave her previous home in a hurry - she wasn't able to bring anything with her, except the pram and Cubby's beloved teddy bear. Something to do with unpaid rent.....all very confusing..... and Cubby's daddy, Cornelius, was away from home.....and now Cordelia doesn't know where he is or how to find him!

Kind Alexander wipes away her tears, and Granny Annie assures her that of course she and Cubby can stay at the Orphanage until Cornelius has been tracked down - then they can all be adopted into a lovely new home together!

Alexander's little brother Hugo admires Cubby's teddy

Old Donkey also lives at the Orphanage - he belonged to Granny Annie's father, who was born in 1913 - and could easily be 100 years old or nearing that. He is very gentle and very patient, and all the bears love him (and so does Granny Annie and he is not up for adoption!)

Here Cordelia has taken baby Cubby, and Alexander's little brother, Hugo, to visit Old Donkey.

He doesn't mind the little bears clambering all over him, though they do wear him out a bit!

Old Donkey when he was new - with my father aged about 3 or 4 in 1916 or 1917

and in about 1982 with my daughter

and in 2012 with my grandson

Old Donkey's companion from 'way back when' is the old bear in the middle of this photo, having a picnic tea with Horatio on the right and Horatio's lady friend of the time on the left (taken in the mid 90s). The old bear, whose name is Rupert, is currently away visiting family but hopes to return to the orphanage soon.

Rupert, again in the mid-90s, with my father, both needing their specs now. My father passed away in 2005, but mostly old bears live forever.

Joy, Heather Brianna (known as Brie) and Rosie have been sorting out some of the clothes kindly donated to the Orphanage Bears....Joy has found some green wellies - they would be just right for Harry when he's gardening, she thinks

Rosie is particularly taken with a straw sun-hat.... and Joy agrees that it suits her

Ok, Rosie, you can keep it!

Unfortunately the boots don't fit Harry - what a shame!

When Joy and Brie go back inside, Rosie stays in the garden in her new sun-hat,
catching the last rays!

Meanwhile, Horatio (who lives with Granny Annie and is not for adoption) has been trying to make some calls to find Cornelius for Cordelia....He also had a call from Seamus to say that he and little Threadbear arrived safely and are enjoying their wonderful new home.

Horatio is quite an old bear and has had quite a few 'heydays' in his long life. In the mid-90s, he posed with my daughter and her little friend for the Bisto Kids competition. This is the photo we sent in.... you can just about see Horatio on her lap

The children won the Regional Final

Bisto Kids 1995 - Melissa and Ryan

and then the Grand Final!

Winning a trip to Disneyland Florida!

Cordelia distracts Cubby who is missing his daddy by taking him to see a new arrival at Grannys Attic Zoo......the large sleek black panther

Cubby goes too close, and Cordelia has to call him back!
Startled, he falls flat on his face!
and has to be comforted by mum!

Some bears arrived at the Orphanage that had been in bad company
- they had to be given the Spa Treatment!

Spa Treatment for Bears
As a  precaution any old or vintage bears are treated to the ‘spa’.
The bears are sealed in a freezer bag and put into the freezer for a minimum of 48 hours and sometimes up to a week. The bears don’t mind this at all, and when they emerge, refreshed, they are given a brush over to remove any dead nasty little things, like moths.
Some people put lavender bags or cedar balls/chips near their vintage bears to deter moths and these smell lovely, but I have been recommended to use Rentokil Moth Killer Strips (available from shops and ebay) for the bears to sit on. These kill moths, larvae and eggs and last for 6 months from the date of opening. (Most bears don't need this type of treatment of course!)

The bears in the spa are not currently available for Adoption but hopefully will be in a few weeks time.

Two other new arrivals at the Orphanage are vulnerable little blind and deaf Cicely, and her faithful companion, Guillaume. They too are not ready for Adoption just yet, but will be very soon.

My grandchildren brought their Build a Bears round for a little party to celebrate the opening of Grannys Attic on Groovycart on 1st Sept 14

Above - Left to right, Nisbet, Bob and Rosie - Build a Bears, Butterscotch, Old Donkey and Joy

and below you can also see Alexander and Hugo, far right
(All the bears, except for the Build a Bears and Old Donkey are available for adoption)

Joy is horrified when my granddaughter steals a Smartie!

Welcome to the Teddy Orphanage at Granny's Attic - Blog 2

August 2014

Welcome to the second blog from me, Granny Annie. at the Teddy Orphanage at Grannys Attic on Groovycart. If you would like to read about the bears that are hoping to be adopted, either go to Groovycart or to my first blog in July. To see HOW to adopt a bear find the details at the end of this blog.

Teddy Adoption at Grannys Attic Groovycart

Grannys Attic is my new Groovycart shop and it is currently open for browsing, but the Grand Opening is not until 1st September. There is much more than Teddy Adoption - Granny keeps everything from a single button to a near life-size Shirley Temple doll, so you never know what you might find. But mostly vintage and modern toys and general homely items. Please do go and have a look!

The bears in the orphanage have been having fun this summer, boating on the river and having picnics, but they are all very much wanting to be adopted, so have to try to look their best. Joy decided that little Threadbear needed a good wash if he hoped to find a new human friend, so she prepared a bath and insisted he get into it!

Then she gave him a good scrub, especially behind the ears!

Granny Annie hung him up to dry, but he didn't mind one bit because that's what happens in the  original story about him - Threadbear by Mick Inkpen

Harry, that kindly soul, took Threadbear out for a picnic, just the two of them, to make up for the bath and to celebrate being clean!

There are two sets of twins waiting to be adopted, Charlie and Archie, and Pinky and Perky.  Poor Pinky had a paw that needed stitching and had to go into the Orphanage Infirmary.

Perky comforts his twin Pinky, waiting for an op!

Then Nurse Heather Brianna arrives, bringing a drink of water for Pinky, and telling Perky off for being on the bed!
 The op was a success!

Pinky and Perky have a quick cuddle together!
Mid August it caused big excitement when I had a request for two of the fourteen bears to be adopted privately. I had asked the very lovely people of the online community of Purplecoo to have a look at Grannys Attic while it is under construction and a special lady fell in love with Seamus and little Threadbear (lucky he had that bath!) so these two have already started their long exciting journey to Uist. They can't wait to see their remote and beautiful new home in the Outer Hebrides - what lucky, lucky bears!

Little Threadie is glad he'll have Seamus on the journey to look after him!

Harry, left, rushes up to shake Seamus' paw and wish him a safe journey!

And Alexander looks on while his little brother, Hugo, gives his special mate,
Threadie a big bear hug!

Threadbear and Seamus wave good bye to the other bears

But I have made a new rule - no more private adoptions -
so the rest of the bears will stay together until at least the 1st September.

They find plenty to do!

Above, Joy, left and Rosie enjoy a vintage magazine from the Attic,
and below, Rosie drapes herself with pearly beads and vintage earrings
 - also for sale in Grannys Attic. She is a very girlie, rather self-centred, bear!

Joy, on the other hand, is more of a homely bear. She likes nothing better
than to sort out the teddies picnic baskets

and I even caught her trying to tidy my china cabinet!

Harry bear likes gardening - whether it flowers or vegetables

The bears take an interest in everything for sale in the Attic

What's that I can see them doing?
Just for fun, they are seeing how many can cram into the basket!

The Orphanage is the forever home of three bears (but not Goldilocks!) - Here they are, left to right, Ted, Candy and Horatio. Ted is my husband's childhood bear and Candy is mine. Horatio was adopted in the 90s from one of the Hugglets BearFests in London - he has his own special history which we might tell one day. They are reading a postcard from another incredibly venerable bear, called Rupert, who is nearly one hundred years old, and currently staying with another family member but hopes to come home well before Christmas. Ted, Candy and Horatio sometimes join in with what the Orphanage bears are doing.... and sometimes they prefer to be on their own.

Bears (NOT for adoption) at the Teddy Orphanage Grannys Attic Groovycart

Grannys Attic has quite a few zoo animals for sale - Alexander took his brother Hugo to visit the snake. Little Hugo was nervous, and hid behind Alexander!

The bears crowd round to see the zoo animals - this was before Seamus and Threadie were adopted. Left to right the bears are - Seamus, Alexander, Hugo, Charlie and Archie, Rosie, Threadbear and Joy.

And what do Seamus and Joy make of this strange creature?

Saying goodbye to Seamus and Threadie was sad, but soon another quiet little bear arrived at the Orphanage, after a bit of an ordeal with some bullies. He's called Nisbet and here he is...

Nisbet Teddy Adoption Grannys Attic Groovycart

Adoption Details:

Name: Nisbet – he doesn’t know his name so is happy to go by his ‘surname’ for the time being.

Age: Not known

Physical Characteristics: Nisbet has beautiful charcoal coloured plush which is wonderfully smooth and strokeable with an almost silvery sheen to it. He has velvety fawn pads on his paws. He has amber eyes and a brown stitched nose (which is quite long and pointy). His head, arms and legs all move, and he has a nicely rounded tummy. His right ear folds forward and the left back. There are a couple of small marks on his paws which I will try to remove. His expression is a little worried (not surprising considering what he’s been through!) but he is quite an elegant medium-sized little gentleman.

Size: In the sitting position, head to bottom, about 11 inches – and head to foot about 14.5 inches.

Label: House of Nisbet, Winscombe, England

Personality/Likes/Dislikes: Nisbet is a quiet bear. He needs someone to take the trouble to bring him out of himself.  He enjoys gracious living, and would like to visit some stately homes and maybe have Afternoon Tea out. He likes well mannered children but doesn’t like raucous, noisy, rude, scruffy bears!

Past History:  Nisbet has recently been with some not very nice or friendly bears who have been teasing him and calling him ‘Moley’ because they said he looks like a mole. This has made him feel a bit nervous and unsure about himself (though he is lovely!). Thankfully, I was able to take him out of that situation. He asked me to do some ‘Find Your Past’ for bears, but unfortunately I haven’t been able to discover his original name or history.  It is known that Nisbet bears are of good quality, and it is obvious that Nisbet himself is a wonderful bear.

Ideal Home: Nisbet just wants to be loved and cared for by somebody kind, who will adopt him and maybe re-name him. He’d love it if you could find him a beautiful bow to wear to contrast with his unusual colour plush.
